The church at Zia Pueblo is well integrated with the adobe architecture of the village that crowns a low mesa above the Jemez River. The church itself was completed in 1612 while the village site dates back to the fourteenth century. This painting depicts Zia Church, framed by Zia polychrome pot and a piñon jay, in 1890 on Christmas Day as people attend Mass.
Douglas Johnson has been painting in northern New Mexico for over forty years. Several of his paintings are now available as Christmas cards.
