Jorge Wilmot Pottery Nativity

Juan Jorge Wilmot Mason was an innovative potter who lived in Tonala, Mexico. His work was so famous and distinctive that he was included in the book, Great Masters of Mexican Folk Art. If you own that book, look on page 28 to see a full-page portrait of him. This nativity is an excellent one. In addition to Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus, it includes three kneeling wise men, three angels (large, medium, and small), an ox and an ass, and two different sheep. One wise man is black. Baby Jesus does not come out of his bed. There are lots of polka dots. This nativity does not have an ethnic Mexican style, but the style created by a talented designer who would have been famous anywhere he lived. The tallest figure is four inches (11 cm.).
