Josefina Aguilar Painted Pottery Nativity
This nativity by Josefina Aguilar, is unsigned. She lives in Oaxaca, Mexico, in the village of Ocotlan Morelos. Her style is instantly recognized, although this nativity is unsigned. Josefina can no longer create her figures because she has lost her eyesight. This nativity includes a white angel with a staff, Mary and Joseph, and the Baby Jesus, who can come out of his beautiful bed. The bed features a long stem blooming flower. Two of the three kings wear crowns and hold gifts. The third king is black and lacks a crown but holds a gift. This is Balthazar. A shepherd holds his lamb, and a woman holds a plate of food. The base of the shepherd has been mended. Three small animals complete the set. The scale of this nativity is a bit smaller than the nativity signed by Josefina, but it is surely her work. The tallest figure is five inches tall (12.5 cm.).
