Glass ornaments
have been blown by mouth in the former East Germany since the middle of the 19th century.
A region of eastern Germany had all the natural materials needed to make glass, and so the small village of Lauscha was founded there in 1597 for that purpose.
By the time Woolworth discovered the earliest glass ornaments made in Lauscha, they were done in private homes as a cottage industry, with every family member contributing to the effort.
At that time, glass ornaments were labor intensive to make and inexpensive to buy, and were sold in dime stores.
Now they are made in modern factories, with protections for the health and safety of the skilled workers.
(paragraph) A rennaisance is now occuring in glass ornaments, with many custom glass ornaments appearing, and more countries involved in mouth-blown glass ornaments and more people interested in collecting them.
Susan offers a series of custom ornaments called "Landmarks of New Mexico".
The sale of these ornaments benefits historic preservation in New Mexico.
The series continues to grow, and is loved both by those who live here and those who wish they did. Susan's custom glass ornaments are made in Poland.
